It is about the ninety-ninth time that I have heard that people from Spain have a lisp when they speak and I think I am gonna explode with all the anger that I have inside after trying to explain to my stubborn boyfriend that I am from Barcelona and I don't speak with a lisp.
The lisp is a stereotype about my language just as stupid and unfound as saying that all the women from my country are beautiful... *****just look at the picture above*****
So NO, WE DON'T SPEAK WITH A LISP. The lisp is only spoken by the people from Madrid, one of the 50 states in Spain. The reason why they speak like that in there is because of the history of the region. A king, Alfonso X, had a impairment in the speech- a lisp- and the people from the court, courtesans, to make him feel better would imitate the way he spoke. In the same way that people from all over England try to speak with an RP accent when trying to sound smart or professional, people from the city of Madrid started imitating the courtesans, which were the wealthy hip people of the time. As centuries past and the way of speaking was used in the households it stayed as the regular variety. But, again, this only happened for the city of Madrid.
The rest of Spain speaks according to the general rules of our language...pretty straight forward to tell you the truth: everything is pronounced as it is written. Any variation from that is either a problem in the speech or a dialect.
It is a pity, though, that many believe the stereotype that the half version of what they have heard from someone very knowledgeable, of course...NOT, told them. South America speaks with an adopted speech impairment called seismo... which means that they pronounce sounds that should be pronounced differently the same ( ce, ci -like the English sounds in "Theatre"- and se, si- like in "Secular"). And I am talking about the basic rules written in all the grammars published in Spanish, the same rules they teach you in preschool when you learn to read.
So stop spreading your ignorance of my language and stop yelling to the world: "I have never studied linguistics in my life" by repeating the statement : PEOPLE FROM SPAIN SPEAK WITH A LISP.
No, you don't know it all. No you don't know the facts about a language better than a native from the place you are talking about and yes, you should travel more and see it for yourself before you repeat something you don't know about. Don't believe everything you read.
got it
ReplyDeleteSpankyou
ReplyDeletecalm down man. Most people are just trying to learn the truth and you sound like loca.
ReplyDeleteActually, the story about the king is an urban myth :) http://www.cranberryletters.com/home/2014/3/23/the-origin-of-the-spanish-lisp
ReplyDeleteYes you do, and it sounds awful
ReplyDeleteBefore you go crazy about people saying Spaniards speak with a lisp (which we don't) get your facts straight. The "lisp" is a Greek influence that Castillian adopted as a "th" sound. If there was a "lisp" because of a freaking King, we, Spaniards, weould not have the"S" sound. Makes no sense.

ReplyDeleteWtf you talking about, I'm from Madrid, Spain, and first of all there are not 50 fucking states, where did you get that from? Every spaniard speaks like that, only with a different accent, and if we have a lisp how is it that we pronounce the “s" right? So before you talk about Spain get your fucking facts right, ignorant.
ReplyDeleteAnd just because you ugly af doesn't mean spanish girls aren't pretty
ReplyDeleteThey're the most beautiful women in the world
